In late January this yr, my mother Esther went in for an everyday bodily and was abruptly recognized with kidney failure. We, as a household, weren’t anticipating this as she had not proven any signs. She had all the time appeared like a superbly wholesome girl in her 50s, however this yr we discovered that her physique was failing her and it was too late for us to do something to assist.

When your kidneys fail, you mechanically suppose “Oh, properly there’s two of them so you’ll be able to depend on the opposite one.” I definitely jumped to that conclusion. Sadly, we discovered that isn’t what happens- when one fails, the opposite does too- and when your physique does not have correctly working kidneys, you’ll be able to’t filter out all of the toxins you eat in your weight loss program. This waste begins to construct up inside your physique, and may trigger  weak point, shortness of breath, lethargy, swelling and confusion. As a result of signs are hardly ever ever current, you might expertise sudden dying . Late stage kidney failure requires a process known as dialysis, the place a machine helps the affected person filter the waste merchandise out of their system. Whereas this remedy is efficient, it is vitally time consuming and limiting. Some sufferers might solely require dialysis thrice per week, whereas others require it on daily basis. Regardless, each affected person will rely upon this machine for the remainder of their life, or till they discover a appropriate kidney for a transplant, which is at present taking years.

Since being recognized on January thirty first, we now have been serving to my mom not solely cope along with her prognosis however attend numerous docs’ appointments, insurance coverage calls, medical exams and imaging. She had a peritoneal catheter surgically positioned final with the intention to put together her for every day dialysis. She’s going to endure 8 hours of dialysis, and as you’ll be able to think about, this can restrict her every day actions as she must be close to the machine for a 3rd of her day. Not solely that, she is going to now must face the unintended effects of dialysis which embrace belly ache, bleeding, peritonitis and excessive or low blood stress, amongst others. All this, till she finds a match and may endure a kidney transplant.

She is working her ultimate week and can then be specializing in her restoration from surgical procedure. My household is coming collectively by way of this robust time to assist her in any method we will. That is the place you are available in. Any donation, huge or small, can be appreciated. It is going to be used to assist her by way of this transition, as she has been abruptly pressured to cease working and we do not know when she is going to be capable to return. Your donation will assist her get by way of the following few months as she adjusts to her new regular. Hospital payments and copays is not going to cease, particularly now that she will depend on this machine, at the least for the following few years.

Thanks for taking the time to learn this, and for caring for my mother.
